{"id":7251,"date":"2020-10-26T21:36:39","date_gmt":"2020-10-27T02:36:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mbcnewhaven.com\/wp\/?p=7251"},"modified":"2020-10-26T21:36:42","modified_gmt":"2020-10-27T02:36:42","slug":"2-peter-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mbcnewhaven.com\/?p=7251","title":{"rendered":"2 Peter 3"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>3\u00a0<\/strong>This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them\u00a0I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder,\u00a0<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>that you should remember the predictions of\u00a0the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles,\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peter already wrote about the importance of being reminded (2 Peter 1:12-13). But here he wanted to emphasize what should be known in light of the coming of Jesus and the prophecies surrounding His coming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come\u00a0in the last days with scoffing,\u00a0following their own sinful desires.\u00a0<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>They will say, \u201cWhere is the promise of\u00a0his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.\u201d<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth\u00a0was formed out of water and through water\u00a0by the word of God,\u00a0<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>and that by means of these the world that then existed\u00a0was deluged with water and\u00a0perished.\u00a0<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>But by the same word\u00a0the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and\u00a0destruction of the ungodly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0\u201cEvery time a blasphemer opens his mouth to deny the truth of revelation, he will help to confirm us in our conviction of the very truth which he denies. The Holy Ghost told us, by the pen of Peter, that it would be so; and now we see how truly he wrote.\u201d (Spurgeon)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and\u00a0a thousand years as one day.<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise\u00a0as some count slowness, but\u00a0is patient toward you,not wishing that any should perish, but\u00a0that all should reach repentance.\u00a0<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>But\u00a0the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then\u00a0the heavens will pass away with a roar, and\u00a0the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>Since all these things are thus to be dissolved,\u00a0what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness,<sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and\u00a0the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn!<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>But according to his promise we are waiting for\u00a0new heavens and a new earth\u00a0in which righteousness dwells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In light of the fact that this world order and the things associated with it will be dissolved, we should live our lives seeking first the Kingdom of God and its righteousness \u2013 that is, having holy conduct and godliness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Words<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him\u00a0without spot or\u00a0blemish, and\u00a0at peace.\u00a0<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>And count\u00a0the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as\u00a0our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you\u00a0according to the wisdom given him,\u00a0<sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters.\u00a0There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction,\u00a0as they do the other Scriptures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0<br>This praise from Peter is even more wonderful when we remember that at one time Paul publicly rebuked Peter for public compromise (Galatians 2:11-21).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>You therefore, beloved,\u00a0knowing this beforehand,\u00a0take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability.<sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>But\u00a0grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.\u00a0To him be the glory both now and to the day of\u00a0eternity.
