Buddy Bag Backpack Program

What is a Buddy Bag?

MBC provides Buddy Bags, full of kid-friendly nutritious food, each Friday for around 70 kids through two school districts. The program serves children who are in need of a little extra food in their homes on the weekend, when free and reduced-price breakfasts and lunches are not available. Children are signed up based on recommendations from their teachers. The teachers are made aware of signs to watch for, including asking for food, taking food from others or being asked for help by the families. MBC purchases all items included in the backpacks, to ensure every child receives the same items that are kid-friendly and nutritious.

How much does each Buddy Bag cost?

Each bag costs approximately $5.00 per child, per week.

What can I donate?

You can donate non-perishable food from our list below or money to support the program.

Where do I take my donations?

You may drop off food at the Church office between 8-2 Monday – Thursday. Monetary donations can be mailed or dropped off at the office as well. Please make the checks payable to Memorial Baptist Church with Buddy Bags in the memo line.

 How are Buddy Bags prepared?

On Wednesdays before churching our students in the MORE TH>N Student Ministry pack the bags. The bags are then transported to New Haven schools and Franklin County R-2 on Thursdays and sent home with students on Friday. Students who receive a bag get the bags put into their backpacks while the classes are empty. The schools do everything they can to protect any student that receives help from our program.

Who all is involved?

Buddy Bags are fully supported by the prayers and monetary donations of many local businesses and individuals in our church and the community.
