2 John

Read this chapter/ book over and over asking yourself if your life is filled with truth.  Consider your ways and correct any ways that are not lined up with truth.  Praise truth and point out and push away false teachings.  Your spiritual life and the spiritual life of your family depends on your actions and reactions to truth.  We are not talking opinions, which everyone has the right to their own, but truth as defined by God is eternal and whatever anyone else believes is not acceptable.

This is written to an older lady and her children.  It is written to encourage her to maintain her walk and the walk of her child in the truth.  There is nothing more important than teaching our family the truth.  I am saddened by parents when they want their child to find his or her own way.  The Bible is not a truth but The Truth.  So the ways of truth are found in its pages.  No one would ever say “I do not want to force math on my child.  For me 2 + 2= 4: I know this truth but I’d rather my child find their own truth”.  No way!  The same thing holds when teaching God’s truth… it is absolute truth.

She is encouraged to continue in the truth, but told to be aware of false teachers.  Just because someone wrote a book, has a radio or TV show, or maybe even teaches does not mean they are teaching truth. The word deceiver means imposter.  They are acting as if they are in Christ and yet they are not.  The religion doing this the most today is the Mormons.   They say they follow Christ but they do not follow the Christ of the Bible.  So beware and search truth out based on the Scriptures.

Verse 8 talks about us getting off track concerning doctrine.  It explains that if we get off track we may lose our rewards.  God tells us that through obedience and faithfulness to Christ we are given rewards in Heaven.  We are encouraged to store up treasure in Heaven and not on earth.  Here it indicates that rewards can be lost or no longer increased when we do not live out the truth.  God places great emphases on knowing and doing the truth.  After all living in the truth is what sets us free.

Think about how your life matches the truth this weekend.  Think about how that truth is lived out in love towards one another.  Meditate, pray and move towards living out truth.  Remove anything that is teaching you false truth.

Have a great weekend; we look forward to seeing everyone this Sunday at church as we teach and proclaim the truth.

Let us know what you think and how this is going.
