Paul continues his journey to encourage the church in the work of Christ. We need to take note in verse 7 where they met on the first day of the week and broke bread; they had the Lord’s Supper. This is where we get the transition to meet on Sunday and not Saturday. The early church started to meet on Sunday to celebrate the resurrection of Christ as well as to separate them from the Jewish service on Sunday. Besides that, they were busy on the Sabbath soul winning during the Jewish service. Talk about not being politically correct. They also did not have a traditional or contemporary service, they had an all-day service! And as it is today someone fell asleep but this poor young man was sitting in the window and fell out of the window. To make matters worse he died when he hit the ground. Don’t worry, Paul did heal this man and caused great excitement in the church. What do you think of having an all-day service? I know we are too busy for the things of God, oh I didn’t mean that the way you just took it. Just maybe if we stayed around until God showed up we would be blessed and excited.
Paul gives a farewell speech to the church. In Paul’s speech he reaffirms the gospel and the call of God on his life. Paul gives a warning that wolves, which look and behave like sheep will come into the church. These wolves will come in teaching false doctrine to get the disciples to fall away from Christ. They will teach things that sound good to move our focus off Christ. We could name a few teachings that have and are being promoted in the church today by wolves. Paul encourages the overseer to beware of this type of teaching and to warn the flock. This is when the flock usually gets mad at the Pastor/overseer. They are mad because they like the doctrines taught by the wolves because they are entertaining to the flesh and enjoyable to all. I want to encourage you to make sure how you live is according to God’s Word. Let’s have a zeal together for truth and all of God’s truth.
