Matthew chapter 22
Weddings are special times, a covenant relationship between a man, a woman and God. This is not an agreement to love until love runs out but a covenant where the two by God become one flesh. A marriage is the picture of our covenant relationship with Christ. We are Christ’ bride through salvation. We anticipate the wedding ceremony being committed to Christ through the sealing of the Spirit at salvation. The Spirit is called the earnest payment or the betrothal payment. When a groom and bride was “engaged”, betrothed to one another, a payment was made for the bride. After the wedding was guaranteed the groom went to prepare a place for the bride. When the place was secured and ready the groom returned and the marriage took place. Christ has gone to prepare a place for us and He will come again for us when it is ready. We are called to the wedding as the bride of Christ. We are His chosen bride. How exciting to know we have been redeemed and placed into the family of God.
In marriage today, the picture of marriage has been destroyed. God instituted marriage with Adam and Eve. God has made marriage a special ceremony that brings two people into one. There are no longer two lives but one. The same happens with our relationship with Christ. We no longer belong to ourselves, we are joint heirs with Jesus Christ.
