We see the disciples prepare for the Passover as the Lord’s Supper is celebrated for the very first time.  What an awesome event.  This is a great picture of the Old Testament lamb and New Testament lamb coming together.  Today we take the Lord’s Supper in remembrance of what Christ has done knowing Jesus anticipates taking of the Lord’s Supper with us in Heaven!  What a glorious event to anticipate every time we take of the holy table.

The rest of this chapter speaks of what the disciples would see as complete disaster and failure.  Peter is told he will deny Christ.  The disciples cannot even pray for an hour with Jesus without falling asleep.  Jesus is betrayed by Judas, one of the twelve.  The disciples could not understand this trouble and the utter destruction of what they believed.  What do you believe concerning the way Christ and the Christian life should be lived out?  When our perspective is not anchored in all the words of Jesus and scripture, we too will fall apart in trouble.

We need to challenge our phrases that we use too often as super erasers to wipe out what is taught in scripture.

These are some of the permissive statements that help our flesh and push away the spirit:

I don’t believe that.  As if our unbelief cancels out the truth.

I don’t think it is a sin.  As if following Jesus does not mean everything that was said and taught in scripture.

We all sin.  This statement now gives us a license to choose a sin; giving the sin permission to imprison us.

They’re okay we just believe different.  No one is okay if they do not believe in salvation the way God has presented it in Scripture.

Without putting in the work to search out scripture to make sure what you believe is what God has taught, life will become frustrated when your ‘god’ fails you.  Building your understanding on principled truths found and interconnected to all scripture will give you a true and living God that will sustain you in every difficulty.

Verse 41- the spirit is indeed willing but the flesh is weak.  Walk in His Spirit!
