Hear and listen to your father’s instructions. It seems too many youth desire to battle instruction and do not want to hear words of wisdom. There are a couple of things at play that we must watch out for. We must help our youth not to have a rebellious heart towards truth, nor be disrespectful towards authority. Yes, youth need to be their own man or woman but it should never come at the cost of being rude to parents. Parents have to develop where that line of growing and respect are as we keep in mind that we are not to provoke our children to wrath.
The other thought here is that the father is giving instruction and teaching doctrine. There must be communication as the father/mother teaches in the home 24/7. We are to teach when our children rise up and as well as when they go to bed. Our children are entrusted to us for a very short period of time, spend it as it says in verse 23 protecting their heart and filling the heart with the things of God.
