Proverbs 17:3 “the Lord trieth the hearts” -God wants to test our hearts so that they will be stronger and to make us pure. Gold is placed into the furnace not to burn it up or to destroy its value but to increase the purity and value of the gold. God tests our hearts to reveal impurities so they can be removed leaving a heart more holy and of better use for His business. This year’s track team at NHHS moved up in the ranking taking first in some events at State. This only happened because more than a few set personal best times. They “tried” themselves and pushed their training and discipline to excel. God wants us to do this in our spiritual walk with Him as well. Some things must go and in some ways I must be pushed in the power of God’s Spirit to be better than yesterday in hopes to walk closer with God today.
God wants to purify our hearts so we can have a “merry heart” that helps us physically as well as mentally. God wants to remove deceit talked about in verse 20. God can clean out the secret places of our hearts that are the root cause of our frustrations. God wants to make us pure before His eyes through the work of the Holy Spirit, the third person of the trinity. Stop fighting Him and allow the refining to take place.
