Verse one – avoid drinking! Now the argument will begin. (See also chapter 23:29-35) According to scripture “strong drink” was any drink mixed to be very intoxicating. Wine in the day of Jesus could get you drunk but it was diluted by mixing it with water to the point that it would be considered non-alcoholic today. The Spirit of God living in you should handle the stress and give you a godly buzz anyway. The glory of young men is their strength in verse 29. The splendor of old men is their gray head, or the wisdom of years. Most of the time when you see the mighty young play the old, the old can win (of course it depends on the game). This happens because the older learned the placement of the ball not just the speed and power. The young believe they can handle anything and everything through strength and determination. However, if the young will listen to those of “wisdom” they can save that strength for another day. Live smarter!
