The Gospel of John:
We start with Chapter 1 which has 50 verses! But you can do it. Read asking God to help you get the big picture first. Take as long as you need, but read as if you need it.
- John 1:1-5: The simple declaration that God and Jesus are one. The Word refers to Jesus Christ (verse 14). Too many times we spend our efforts striving to figure out how. Wanting to know how is a wonderful drive, but when God tells us how, and God is the only eye witness, then we should accept it as truth. And because it is truth, speculation or theory should not replace that truth. Praise God as creator.
- John 1:6-16: John comes to celebrate Jesus, knowing he, John, is not the central part of this amazing story and life. Jesus is who John wants to talk about! John knows Jesus is the Light. This Light can save all who will receive and believe on His name. (verse 12)
- John 1:17-25: The Law meets Jesus. Go deeper if you have time and read or listen to this sermon by Dr. John Piper on Baptism: http://www.desiringgod.org/resource-library/sermons/i-baptize-you-with-water Praise God we are saved, not by keeping of the law but by the grace of God. But we still need to grow in grace which brings us to a desire to keep God’s law out of love for God.
- John 1:26-33: Jesus was baptized. Wow! Jesus is God and yet He submitted to baptism. The end of the chapter is really an adventure in soul winning! People who are following Jesus will bring other people to follow Jesus. Remember we do not want anyone to follow us unless we are sold out and following Jesus. Praise God for the Lamb of God, who took away my sins. Praise God for the lamb who has taken away your sins.
