Titus was left here in Crete to “set in order”; God is a God of order and desires to have structure in our Christian life and in the life of the local Church. Each church should have an elder or pastor who is called to be the spiritual leader in the church. They are to watch over what is taught and to correct anyone that teaches anything against God’s word. They are to call those in sin back to living for the Lord.
Verse 16 said that there are people who profess Christianity but their works tell on them. I just heard James the half-brother of Jesus who wrote the book of James say, “AMEN!” Of course James said “faith without works is dead.” To profess Christ and live totally against Him was not accepted in Paul’s day and should not be accepted in ours. To say “you don’t know my heart”, is a copout as is the statement “we all sin”. These are statements that make us feel as if we have a license to be disobedient. Our goal as Christians should be to live godly in Christ Jesus.
Today will be a great day to police ourselves to see if our walk matches our talk. What would you say if an elder from the church called out your belief or sin? Would you be willing to take it as a correction from the Lord? When the correction is not received God does some chastising of His own on our life. I want to be sensitive to His Spirit, His Word and His Saints so that I walk as I talk.
