Today we are reading chapter 12 and I want us to focus on verse 24, “Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God?” Jesus, here, is answering the Sadducees, one of the religious groups in Jesus’ day. The Sadducees did not believe in a resurrection so they proposed this question to Jesus concerning marriage in the resurrection. Verse 24 is part of the answer Jesus gives them. There are two points, first Jesus said they did not know the Scriptures. This is why it is important that we know what the Word of God says and that we compare scripture with scripture. We mess up when we grab a verse not in context and strive to make that verse cancel out other truths. All of God’s Word fits together and works in our lives when it is acted upon in its totality. So first don’t be a verse grabber. Today you can do what Jesus says by reading God’s Holy Word and acting on it.
Secondly, we must believe, know and understand the power of God. Salvation takes the power of God. The power of the Holy Spirit must convict and then transform us. Do you believe that the power of God can work in your life today? By God’s power your Red Seas can be parted so that you find a way to escape your problems and difficult situations. By God’s power you can find healing and strength. God’s power can also sustain you in the storms of life so that Christ is glorified in the storm and others who are caring for you can hear the truth of God’s Word from you. The Sadducees thought something was impossible by God therefore concluded their doctrine by what they perceived. Faith is trusting God’s word over our perception.
